How To Fix Mic & Headset Not Working On Xbox Series X|S (Easy Method)

If your microphone or headset isn’t working on your Xbox Series X|S, the issue could stem from hardware, settings, or firmware problems. Here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix the problem:

Step 1: Perform Basic Hardware Checks
Ensure Proper Connections: If you’re using a wired headset, make sure it’s firmly plugged into the controller’s 3.5mm audio jack. For wireless headsets, confirm the USB dongle is securely inserted into the Xbox.

Check Controller Connection: The headset connects through the controller, so ensure your controller is synced to the Xbox. If it’s not, press the Xbox button on the controller, then press the sync button on the console and controller to reconnect.

Inspect the Headset: Look for frayed cords or damaged wires. If the cable looks worn, it might be the culprit. Test the headset on another device, like a phone or laptop, to see if it works there.

Verify Power: For wireless headsets, ensure the headset is charged and powered on. If the battery is dead, it won’t function.

Check for Mute: Most headsets have a mute button on the cord or earpiece. Make sure it’s not muted—toggle it on and off to confirm.

Step 2: Adjust Xbox Audio Settings
Enable Headset Mic: Press the Xbox button on your controller to open the guide, then go to System, Audio. Turn on Headset Mic if it’s off.

Adjust Mic Volume: In the same Audio menu, find Mic Monitoring and adjust the slider to increase the volume. This can help make your voice clearer.

Balance Chat and Game Audio: Go to Headset Chat Mixer in the Audio menu. Move the slider to balance game and chat audio—too much game audio might drown out your mic.

Step 3: Check Privacy and Online Settings
Xbox privacy settings can block voice chat. To fix this:
Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & System, Settings, Account, Privacy & Online Safety.

Select Xbox Network Safety, then View Details and Customize.

Go to Communications & Multiplayer and ensure you’ve allowed communication with Friends or Everybody.

Step 4: Test with Different Hardware
Try Another Controller: Plug your headset into a different controller. Xbox One controllers are compatible with Series X|S, so you can use an older one if available. If it works, your original controller might have a faulty audio jack.

Test a Different Headset: If you have another headset, connect it to the controller. If the new headset works, your original one might be broken.

Wireless Headset Compatibility: If using a wireless headset, confirm it’s compatible with Xbox Series X|S. Some Xbox One headsets may not work natively—check with the manufacturer.

Step 5: Update Firmware and Restart
Update Controller Firmware:
Press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & System, Settings, Devices & Connections, Accessories.

Select your controller and choose the three-dot menu.

If an update is available, install it. Outdated firmware can cause headset issues.

  1. Don’t get rig 600!! Completely trash. Company is trash. Hope the entire company ends up in a ditch

  2. WOO! Thanks, I am not sure what thing i clicked that made it work (possibly the mono setting) but I can now get My headphones or external speakers working from 3.5mm from the controller.

  3. If it’s wired, you have to shove it in REALLY hard. Summon the strengh to pull Excalibur out of the stone, and use it to shove the cable. Hope your heart is three sizes too big because this one’s gonna require the strengh of ten grinches plus two.
