How to set up a mesh WiFi network

When setting up a mesh WiFi network, here’s what you need before you get started:

•A working internet plan with your internet service provider (ISP)
•A modem that has been registered with your ISP and has an active internet connection
•An ethernet cable (Cat5e or above)
•A mobile device (with the TP-Link Deco app installed)

If you’ll be replacing a standalone router (or an older mesh node) with a new mesh node, the first thing you need to do is power off your existing router and disconnect it from your modem. This is also a good time to power off your modem as well.

With your modem powered off (and your old router disconnected from it), you now need to open the Deco app on your mobile device.

Once the Deco app opens, you’ll need to log into your TP-Link account (if you already have one), or create a new account.

From there, you’ll be able to identify that you’d like to create a new mesh network.

Once you do this, you’ll be able to follow the on-screen prompts to do the following:

•Connect your modem and mesh node with an ethernet cable
•Power on your modem and mesh node
•Set the network name and password for your mesh node’s WiFi network and walk through the mesh node configuration steps in the Deco app

Once you complete all the setup steps in the Deco app, you’ll have a working mesh WiFi network.

  1. Does unplugging your Service providers router lose your wired connections. I use both wired and wireless in the home.I was using a wifi extender on the main floor. But its getting weak and thought mesh might be the way to go

  2. I have wireless cctv front and back of house running off my wireless router provider. Can I add my cctv to this mesh set up?

  3. Wow, I just came across your video… perfect timing, my granddaughter lives interstate and has moved into a two level home and her wifi (with an extender) is hopeless. I’d love to be there to help her out but that’s not possible. However, I’ve just told her to buy the Deco Mesh system and she can follow your great setup video and she will be good to go.
Finding your video was perfect timing and the way you explain things is perfect for anyone to follow.
