I think regulations may be the reason I’m not seeing the Aqara smoke detector on Amazon. I think, largely, laws in America require smoke detectors to include carbon monoxide detection as well. Similarly, most smoke detectors are now photoelectric instead of the older radioactive interference models, because the PE type can detect the kind of smoke that comes from smoldering fires before they burst into flames. That means catching the start of the fire before it flames up, instead of detecting it later when it’s engulfing the home. I think that may even be a regulation now, too.
If I could design and sell a smart home smoke & CO detector, I would make sure it works with Google Home, Home Assistant, Hubitat, and Alexa and I’d make sure the batteries can be changed and use common battery size like 3x AA. That way customers can see the battery status and even get notifications when the batteries run low and then they can change them out. Personally I like rechargeable batteries. I’d also add other detectors like radon, mold, humidity, and glass break and presence, it would make the batteries not last long, but being replaceable and sending notification of low batteries I think that would work out. People would probably have to change the batteries once a year or so.
They sell smoke spray to test smoke detectors; the fire techs use it every year at my office to test them.
Is it a breath of fresh air? Well your detector should be able to answer that.
Can’t agree! Nest Protect is/was fantastic. Angle light is enough for a night walk under it… I really miss that feature! And it looks so good. Unfortunatelly Google killed whole line of that products ;(
